U3A North Gold Coast Inc.

We offer exciting opportunities for over 50s to meet like-minded individuals, and participate actively in the social, cultural and recreational life of the Northern Gold Coast.

Our organisation enables interested people to attend classes that cover a range of activities such as yoga, dance and music, games and card groups, foreign languages, world history, philosophy, science, literature, theatre visits, and excursions. We also offer Information Technology (IT) sessions to keep seniors abreast of developments in the online worlds of Apple and Microsoft.

In particular we welcome those who would like to impart the knowledge and skills they have accumulated over a lifetime’s learning and experience to share with our members by becoming a tutor. Academic or other qualifications are valued but not essential.

Most importantly, U3A North Gold Coast provides occasions and venues for members to meet up with kindred spirits through class involvement, over a coffee or at an outing. There are no exams or tests, just learning for the joy of learning!

All you need to bring is your curiosity and enthusiasm!

The U3A's Origins

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community - those in their third 'age' of life. The 'third age' is defined by a time in your life (not necessarily chronological) where you have the opportunity to undertake learning for its own sake.

The University of the 3rd Age (U3A) started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. It was started by Prof. Pierre Vellas. In France the Third Age University is mostly associated with a local university.

By the early 1980s, the scheme reached the United Kingdom where its nature was radically changed to be more a self-help organisation. This model is also used in Australia, Cyprus, Dominica, New Zealand and South Africa where it was recognised that most people of retirement age have something to contribute and the emphasis has been on sharing, without formal educational links.

Many English-speaking countries have followed this model, whereas continental European countries have mostly followed the French model. For historical reasons, lifelong learning institute is the term used in the United States for organisations and similar groups. There is no universally accepted model for the U3A.

The first Australian U3A opened in Melbourne in 1984 with many other U3As rapidly opening across the country. There are now about 300 U3As in Australia, with about 100,000 members. The Australian model has U3As established as autonomous groups, with their own administration and curriculum according to the needs and interests of each group.

In Queensland, U3A is the largest provider of adult education programs for retirees. All programs are provided by volunteers. There are now 35 U3A groups in Queensland.

Membership with U3A North Gold Coast opens the door to a welcoming community of learning, friendship and new experiences.

A current membership allows you to participate in our classes, workshops, social activities and events throughout the year.

Full Year Membership: $60
(1 January – 31 December)

Half-Year Membership: $40
(For new members joining after 30 June)

Our programs run across four terms each year, following the Queensland school calendar.

Classes remain affordable, with fees from $2.90 per session, and some special activities or outings may have additional costs.

Membership Renewal

All memberships expire on 31 December each year. From 1 November of the current year you can renew for the following year at the reduced rate of $50pa.

Please note: Membership Renewal is available online until 31 March each year. After that date all expired memberships become inactive.

If you wish to renew membership after 31 March, you can contact our office and ask to have your membership reactivated.

If you have skipped a year then you may have to join again as a new member.

01 — GETTING TO KNOW U3A

What exactly is U3A?

Think of U3A as a place where curiosity has no age limit.

U3A North Gold Coast is a friendly, volunteer-run community where people over 50's come together to learn, share knowledge, discover new interests and enjoy good company.

Our program includes everything from fitness, languages, arts and technology to history, music, games, discussion groups, social activities and outings.

No exams. No grades. No pressure.

Just learning, connection and enjoyment.

What can I get out of joining U3A?

Perhaps a new skill. A forgotten passion. A reason to get out and about each week. Or simply some good company.

U3A gives you opportunities to keep learning, stay active, meet people and try something different in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Come for the class. Stay for the friendships.

What can I do at U3A?

Quite a lot!

Explore our program and you'll find arts and crafts, languages, technology, history, literature, music, exercise and wellbeing, games, discussion groups, social activities and outings.

You don't need to be an expert, and you don't need previous experience.

Bring your interest, your experience — or simply your curiosity.

02 — MEMBERSHIP

Do I need to be a member?

Yes. You need to be a financial member of U3A North Gold Coast to enrol in and attend our classes and activities.

Want to see what U3A is like first?

Prospective members are welcome to try one class free before joining, subject to class availability.

It's a great way to meet the tutor, experience the class and see if U3A is right for you.

How much does membership cost?

We aim to keep membership affordable and accessible.

$60 — New member, full-year membership
$50 — Annual renewal when renewed before 31 March
$40 — Reduced half-year fee for new members joining after 1 July

Class fees are separate and are displayed when you enrol through your Member Portal.

Can I join during the year?

Absolutely!

You don't have to wait for the beginning of the year or a new term. New members are welcome to join throughout the year.

If you join after 1 July, the reduced half-year membership fee of $40 applies.

How many classes can I enrol in?

As many as you'd like!

There is no limit to the number of classes you can enrol in each term, provided places are available and any applicable class fees are paid.

Try something familiar. Discover something completely new.

Your time. Your interests. Your choice.

03 — CLASSES & LEARNING

Do I need qualifications or previous experience?

Not at all.

U3A is about learning for enjoyment, not qualifications. Most classes don't require previous experience, and there are no exams, tests or assignments.

Whether you're an enthusiastic beginner or already have some experience, there's always something new to discover.

How much time do I need?

Most regular classes run for around two hours, although this can vary between classes.

Social activities, outings and special events may take longer and are generally enjoyed at a more relaxed pace.

Choose what works for you — one class, several classes, or something occasional.

How do I choose the right class?

Start with what interests you!

Before enrolling, click on the class you're considering and read the full class description.

The class title alone may not tell you everything you need to know. The description will give you a better idea of what the class involves and help you choose something that matches your interests and expectations.

Can I join a class after the term has already started?

Yes, in most cases.

If places are still available, you may be able to join a class after the term has commenced. The full-term class fee applies, regardless of when you join during the term.

Please check the individual class details or contact the tutor or office if you're unsure whether a place is available.

What happens with ongoing classes?

Some classes, such as language classes, continue from one term to the next and may require continuity for effective learning.

Members currently enrolled in these classes may be given priority to continue in the subsequent term. Where places become available, other members may then be able to enrol.

If you are enrolled in an ongoing class, watch for information from U3A about enrolment arrangements for the following term.

04 — CLASS FEES & CANCELLATIONS

What happens if I cancel a class?

If you have enrolled and paid for a course or one-off class but can no longer attend, please advise U3A as soon as possible.

A full refund of the class fee may be provided when cancellation is advised at least four business days before the course or one-off class commences.

For cancellations received after this time, the class fee is generally non-refundable.

If you're unsure about your circumstances, please contact the U3A office.

What if a class is full?

Some classes have limited places.

If a class is full, you may be able to join a waitlist, depending on the class.

If a place becomes available, members will be contacted according to the applicable enrolment arrangements.

05 — PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Where do classes take place?

There is a bus stop outside the Centre on Brisbane Road, and limited free parking is available within the Centre precinct.

Some activities and outings may take place at other locations. Please check the individual class or activity details before attending.

Is parking available at the Labrador Community Hub?

Yes, but parking is limited.

Limited free parking is available within the Hub precinct. Please refer to the photo below to familiarise yourself with the available parking area before you arrive.

If the available spaces are full, please allow extra time to find alternative parking nearby.

Can children accompany me?

No. Children cannot accompany members to U3A classes or activities.

This helps us maintain a safe, comfortable and appropriate environment for all members.

What if I can't attend a class?

We understand — plans change.

If you can't attend a class, please let your tutor know using Advise Absence under the My Classes tab in your Member Portal.
