This class will build upon the foundation established in the previous Social Media & Artificial Intelligence (AI)  courses by integrating Geopolitics topics and exploring various podcasts, thus providing a comprehensive overview of contemporary tech information sources.

Students will delve into a broad array of AI applications, from ChatGPT to AI-generated art, music, videos, and deep fakes, with practical examples demonstrated during the class. The course will emphasize the interactive nature of social media, like X, as a platform for the collective creation, sharing, and aggregation of content, ideas, and expressions. Through detailed examinations of how social media and AI impact social life, art, politics, and science, students will develop a nuanced understanding of these technologies.

The curriculum will also focus on differentiating between various types of information — FACTS, TRUTH, GOALS, WISHES, DELUSION, PROPAGANDA, DIVERSION, and LIES — encouraging a fact-based approach to analyzing content. By fostering critical thinking and detachment from biased information, students should attain a rational perspective on diverse sources, enhancing their ability to navigate the complex information landscape shaped by social media and AI.

Included in the information space are videos and songs plus a review of some of the most recent alternative media sources using ChatGPT as a companion for the tutorials.

This course is for people who already know how to play Bridge and are in it for the pure enjoyment of playing and interacting socially. It is not competition focussed at all. Members who join this class will be able to hone their Bridge playing skills by learning from one another in a friendly atmosphere. It is envisaged that other card games may be incorporated in the future into this course. We really would like more players to come along!

Your tutor, Michelle looks at the history of Criminology and how it has evolved over time. Also, the course covers various aspects within the world of Criminology, including DNA, cold cases, fraud and cybercrime etc, with an open discussion as required at the end of the seminar. We also discuss ways in which we as citizens can be of local value to our society, as Citizen Criminologists.

In this course, you will enjoy the history and evolution of both Opera and Ballet over the centuries.  

Opera has played a significant role in the development of western classical music from Handel and Mozart to Verdi and Wagner. Our classes will highlight the Baroque, classical, romantic and modern opera periods.

One of the earliest forms of ballet was court ballet. The development of ballet technique began in Italy in the 17th century. As a class, we will travel through the evolution of ballet up to ballet innovations of our modern world.

This is a foundation class for those who are interested in learning French but have no previous knowledge of the language. It will focus on introducing students to the basic vocabulary, structures and pronunciation of the language, with the aim of enabling them to use what they learn in simple conversational settings. 

Students do not need to buy a text book prior to beginning the course, but will need a notebook or other writing materials. A simple 2-ring binder with some paper for note-taking would be ideal as there will be some A4 size handouts.

This course assumes a basic grasp of the language with understanding of concepts such as gender of nouns, agreement of adjectives, conjugation of regular and irregular verbs.

It will focus on developing and extending this knowledge with an emphasis on listening and speaking, so that students will be able to engage in conversations on common topics.

This course is designed for family historians who are familiar with the basics of searching and recording of your ancestors using the Legacy Family Tree programme (free). Your tutor, Brendan, has travelled to Japan many times over the years as a tourist himself and as a travel guide for high school students. In his past role as a teacher, he also taught the Japanese spoken and written language.  He knows his way around Japan!

This 2 session fun course begins with a video overview introducing Japan as a travel destination which will include key travel details so you will learn what to expect as a tourist.

The course will teach and practice essential vocabulary for basic interactions, focusing on what to take, understanding train pass values, and safety. It covers the arrival process at Tokyo’s Narita Airport, navigating into Tokyo, finding accommodations, dining, shopping, and exploring local transport and attractions.

PART 1

After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the German states remained fragmented, but Prussia began to rise as a dominant power. Through strategic diplomacy and military victories, especially over Denmark, Austria, and France, Prussia gradually unified the German states. By 1871, this culminated in the creation of the German Empire under Prussian leadership, marking a significant shift in European power dynamics.

PART 2

General Charles Gordon was a British colonial leader known for his pivotal roles in both China and Khartoum during the 19th century. In China, he earned fame for his leadership in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion, where his military skill and bravery gained him widespread recognition. Later, Gordon became a symbol of British imperial ambition, famously defending Khartoum against a Mahdist siege. His death in 1885 while holding the city made him a martyr and cemented his legacy as a heroic, yet controversial, figure in British colonial history.

PART 3

The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 was a pivotal conflict between the Kingdom of Prussia and the French Empire, triggered by tensions over the balance of power in Europe. The war, sparked by a diplomatic dispute over the Spanish throne, saw Prussia, led by Otto von Bismarck, decisively defeat France. The conflict resulted in the collapse of the French Empire, the capture of Napoleon III, and the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership, culminating in the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871. The war reshaped European politics and set the stage for future conflicts.

Medicine during 19th-century wars saw significant advancements and challenges as conflicts highlighted the need for medical innovation. The lack of proper sanitation, limited understanding of infection, and rudimentary surgical techniques led to high mortality rates. However, the period also witnessed important breakthroughs, such as the development of anesthesia, antiseptics, and improvements in battlefield care. Pioneers revolutionized nursing practices, emphasizing hygiene and organization, which laid the foundation for modern military medicine.

PART 5

After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, Germany, now unified under Prussian leadership, began a period of rapid expansion and consolidation of power. The newly formed German Empire emerged as a dominant European force, both militarily and economically. Under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Germany sought to strengthen its position through strategic alliances, a growing industrial base, and colonial ventures in Africa and the Pacific. This expansionist drive contributed to the tensions that would later shape the complex alliances and rivalries leading up to World War I.

PART 6

The Indian Mutiny of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Rebellion, was a major, though ultimately unsuccessful, uprising against British rule in India. Sparked by discontent among Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company’s army, the mutiny quickly spread to other segments of society, fueled by resentment over British policies, cultural insensitivity, and economic exploitation. The revolt, marked by fierce battles and widespread violence, was eventually suppressed, but it led to significant changes in British colonial governance, with the British government taking direct control of India from the East India Company.

In this course, students will explore Italy's famous landmarks, monuments, artworks, traditions, whilst learning to write and pronounce Italian words and phrases and connecting them to key events. 

Support material throughout the course includes videos, photos, theatre, cinema, and concerts. The course also covers notable Italian figures from history, literature, science and entertainment. Local curiosities, regional traditions, and the "Made in Italy" lifestyle, from food to fashion, through to cars and design, will also be featured. 

The course strongly encourages member interaction and participation, led by the tutor.

Alex (your tutor) has had over 40 years’ experience as a dancer in musicals and TV shows in London and Hong Kong, working with many famous artists in the entertainment world. He has directed and choreographed musicals and major fashion presentations in Asia and Perth and is also an experienced tap dancer.

We will be meeting in an upstairs room ACOUSTIC only for learning songs to a YouTube backing and then at least once a month we do a performance to open mic or jam and the main purpose is performance.

Performance at external venues can be acoustic or electric. 

Specially welcome are three ukulele ladies to sing as backing singers + harmonies with Ukes. Also can use 2 lead 2 rhythm 2 bass. We have a drummer and anybody with percussion/drum experience for a Cajon/congas who wants to be cool and have a try at stuff is welcome.

The emphasis will be ROCK –  Rock ‘n’ roll, Blues, Folk, Progressive, Heavy, Psychedelic, Emo, Boogie, Rockabilly, Rock and Rock.

We’ll meet every fortnight for these five songs and add only one new one each session.

Unlock Your Creative Potential!

Artist and art tutor Roger Blinko continues his classes at U3A and this year embarks on a program to discover how to infuse freedom and fun into your artwork. This course will revolutionize your sketching approach.

Course Highlights:

• Embrace new techniques with a fearless attitude toward mistakes.
• Develop a loose interpretation of reference photos, focusing on essential elements and casual strokes.
• Master the continuous line drawing technique to enhance perspective and proportional skills.
• Explore pen and wash techniques using pen ink, watercolour and other soluble media

Roger will be simultaneously teaching this class in Canada and there is plan to share work and experiences between the two classes.

Materials to Bring:

• An A4/A5  sketchbook (preferably multi-media paper like Strathmore or Canson )
• Pencil/eraser (occasional use ) 
• Pen with permanent black ink (Micron type, ballpoint, fountain pen , or traditional dip pen and ink)
• Watercolour is to be used in the artworks, so brushes, tubes of paint and a plastic water container and plastic palette are required materials.  A limited palette of colours will be recommended - Indigo or Phylo Blue, Alizarinn Red or Pyrrol Red, Yellow Ochre or Quinacridone Gold and a warm and cool grey which can be mixed with Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue.

In this session we will discuss:

Medical Triumphs: In the late eighteenth century medicine had little to offer other than purging and bloodletting and it was fertile ground for Samuel Hahnemann to introduce his idea of Homeopathy. However, the discovery of Penicillin and subsequent antibiotics changed all that and lethal infections such as meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia could now be treated. Vaccine development almost totally eradicated the dreadful disablement of polio.

Medical Catastrophes: The sudden increase in babies born without limbs in 1960 led to the discovery that a new drug (Thalidomide), given to mothers in early pregnancy was causing this tragedy. Even today new drugs like Zantac and Losartan have been shown to cause cancers and had to be withdrawn. This has led to a massive growth in “alternative” medicines that do not require registration as their components which are mostly herbal are thought to be harmless.

 Come digging through astounding ancient empires in Mesoamerica and South America. Start with the Olmecs, the ‘mother of Mesoamerica’ where Sun and Moon Temples reach to the sky in the middle of an amazing city that whispers of a life gone past. Trade routes cross Mesoamerica engaging with civilizations such as Teotihuacan and its almost forgotten wonders. 

Jump forward from BCE to CE as the Mexica wander the lands searching for their forever home that will become Tenochtitlan and the center of the Aztecs. Known as great warriors who prefer to capture than kill their enemies to keep them as sacrifices to feed the great God Huitzilopochtli. They thrive as they unite the empire, that is, until the Spanish arrive. 

In the same era in South America another great empire had established itself. The Incas began as a small tribe that steadily grew in power to conquer other civilizations all down the coast from Colombia to Argentina. They are remembered for their contributions to religion, architecture and their famous network of roads throughout the region. You may have heard of Cusco, The Sacred Valley of the Incas, and Machu Picchu. These are just some of the names of a place that conjure up the true magic and mystery of an ancient Inca civilization and culture. 

Metaphysics is a pleasant inclusive SELF HEALING, informative class, that involves ancient and current understandings of healing, plus basic aspects of Astrology. Understanding aspects of the universe and its evolutionary timing throughout our own lifetimes, along with choice options, of a societal future, as a whole is also a part of this class.  

This is a self-driven non-gender class of information, with the potential to become more enlightened about one’s own more harmonious self. A basic knowledge of Astrology is beneficial, but not essential, as required information will be provided.

Because writing a book is hard work. Some don't know where to start. Some are too busy. Others give it a shot and quickly surrender to what seems an insurmountable task." - Memoir Writing for Dummies p61.

This course is about having fun together helping each other to source ideas and sharpen the plot in the Memoirs we write. Of course, there is some work required – each of us needs to write a memoir regularly preferably fortnightly. We can learn theoretical skills, but our Memoirs draw more on the stories we tell and the way we communicate with the reader. Too much theory dulls the reader’s experience. Participation in the group is essential - mature age writers have years of wisdom and experience with the history of our time to help each other fill the gaps.

Join this course to learn something new about ancient Egypt - not which king built which temple, but WHY they were built and WHAT they have to offer us now.  Learn what the ancient Egyptians said about their own Gods, what they taught the priests and priestesses and how they viewed their place in the Cosmos.

If you are interested in reading/poetry, when did you last read a poem by a living/contemporary Australian poet?  Contemporary Australian poetry is alive and well and thriving, in poetry collections, online websites, festivals, magazines.  If you are drawn to reading a chapter a week (5 pages), including the poem to be found there, from Sarah Holland-Batts book, Fishing for Lightning; The Spark of Poetry and meeting with others to engage your attentiveness, curiosity, imagination and expressiveness around a poem a week then this class is for you.  Prepare to be informed, moved, challenged, and to enjoy, even to dislike – reading poets/poetry aloud and exploring the many ways poets in Australia today are writing and speaking.  Participants will need a copy of Sarah’s book, available in Kindle and paperback.

In 43 BC, under the Emperor Claudius, a successful invasion laid the foundation for the conquest and assimilation of Roman culture and architecture in large parts of Britain, which lasted until 410 AD, the remnants of which can still be seen in Britain today.

Where were you on the July 20, 1969?  

The Apollo 11 Moon Landing was televised to over six hundred million people.  Many sceptics have argued it was a huge hoax by NASA. The only people who know the truth would be the three astronauts who risked their lives to carry out this mission.

The Bayeux Tapestry tells one of the most famous stories in British history – that of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, particularly the Battle of Hastings, which took place on 14 October 1066. But who made the Tapestry and how long did it take? What materials were used and how was it stitched? And how has the Tapestry survived for nearly 1,000 years?

These sessions are for Ukulele and Guitar players as well as for those that play any instrument. Also ideal for non-musicians that love to sing along with songs from our youth (as well as a few modern songs). Whether progressing from Watercolour for Beginners or bringing personal knowledge, our friendly group welcomes you. This course is designed for beginners including those who have never painted before. Following her retirement as a primary school teacher, your tutor, Dianne, pursued her passion for art and completed a B.of Fine Art at QCA – Griffith University. She has also now completed a B.of Arts, majoring in Art History at UQ. 

In this 20 lesson course (Terms 1 & 2) you will study twenty different water colour techniques – flowers (a rose), landscapes, still life and seascapes, to name a few.

Maintaining joint mobility is crucial during aging. Yin yoga, a slow passive practice focuses on seated or lying-down postures held for several minutes. It targets joints rather than muscles, promoting flexibility. After a session, expect to feel revitalized and ready to tackle life.

Requirements: Bring a yoga mat and any props if you have them.
